Aiming for zero

About Us

WhAT?

The Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative aims to eliminate the oil and gas industry’s methane footprint by 2030.

It calls for an all-in approach that treats methane emissions as seriously as the oil and gas industry already treats safety: aiming for zero and striving to do what is needed to get there.

Aiming for Zero acts as a complement for key initiatives such as the Methane Guiding Principles, the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 and the Global Methane Pledge.

WhY?

Methane is responsible for around 30% of global warming.

Reducing methane emissions from oil and gas operations is one of the best short-term opportunities to advance the goals of the Paris Agreement. It’s time for the industry to lead this effort.

Who?

We hope to see a broad coalition of companies and organisations joining this effort

The Initiative was launched in March 2022 by OGCI and is endorsed by the CEOs of all its member companies. It is open to all companies involved in exploration, extraction and/or production of oil or natural gas can join as Signatories. Other organizations can join as Supporters.

How?

Joining the Initiative comes at no financial cost – the investment is in reducing methane emissions

Companies joining the Initiative agree to do what it takes to reach near zero methane emissions, reporting transparently, adopting better monitoring and measurement technologies and supporting the implementation of sound regulations. They will also encourage their partners to do the same.
