Accenture, a leading global professional services company, has signed as a supporter for Aiming for Zero, an initiative launched by the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) to encourage the oil and gas industry to cut methane emissions.
Accenture joins over 80 companies that have pledged to achieve near-zero methane emissions from operated oil and gas assets by 2030. Reducing methane emissions from oil and gas is one path to help meet the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and is a top priority for OGCI, which launched the initiative last year.
Bjørn Otto Sverdrup, OGCI Executive Committee Chairman, said: “I’m delighted Accenture has joined as a supporter of Aiming for Zero, connecting a growing number of businesses across the world who are committed to reaching near-zero methane emissions.
“Supporters like Accenture are key to the success of the initiative. They strive to transform businesses at speed and scale, and that’s exactly what’s needed to reach near-zero methane from oil and gas operations to help limit global warming.”
Accenture deploys digital technologies in its work with oil and gas companies to help drive efficiency in operations and maintenance – critical areas for managing and reducing methane emissions. Its Methane Emissions Monitoring Platform enables operators to measure baseline methane emissions in real time and detect leaks so they can be addressed.
Technological breakthroughs, combined with a shift in how people work and appropriate incentives, are imperative for tackling methane emissions.
“Fifty percent of oil and gas CO2 equivalent emissions are from methane,” said John Downie, senior managing director and global Energy lead, Accenture. “By adopting a preventative approach that is enabled by technology platforms instead of today’s reactive, find-and-fix approach, the industry could accelerate the near total elimination of methane from its production system within the next decade. With decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, we’re excited to join the Aiming for Zero Initiative.”
Aiming for Zero supplements a number of other multi-stakeholder initiatives to reduce methane emissions, including the Methane Guiding Principles, the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 and the Global Methane Alliance.
Background
OGCI is a CEO-led organization bringing together 12 of the world’s largest energy companies to lead the oil and gas industry’s response to climate change. The group aims to accelerate collective action towards a net-zero emissions future in line with the Paris Agreement.
