Society of Petroleum Engineers joins Aiming for Zero to magnify access to knowledge and best practices across the globe

October 16, 2023

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) recently became a supporting organization of the Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative, which aims to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas operations to near zero by 2030.

Reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector will be essential to meeting the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and is a top priority for the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), which launched the initiative last year.

SPE, a not-for-profit professional association with over 119,000 global members working in oil and gas exploration and production, joins over 90 companies and organizations, including private and state-run energy companies, service firms, technology providers, NGOs and consultancies.

OGCI Executive Committee Chairman Bjørn Otto Sverdrup said, “SPE is the leading forum for sharing technical and professional knowledge in our industry and their support will be invaluable in helping oil and gas companies to reduce methane emissions at their operations so we can meet net-zero goals.”

2023 SPE President Med Kamal added, “The measurement, reporting, and cost-effective abatement of methane emissions has become an area of increased focus for SPE members. In response, SPE has expanded its educational content and opportunities for members to connect, including the establishment of a new Methane Emissions Management Technical Section. The SPE Board of Directors approved the recommendation to join OGCI’s initiative to magnify access to knowledge and best practices across the globe.”

Signatories and supporters of Aiming for Zero recognize that virtually all methane emissions from the industry can and should be avoided.

Supporters endorse the initiative, encourage new signatories to join and, where relevant, support signatories as they reduce their methane emissions.

The initiative’s clear and straightforward ambition aims to help companies galvanize action within their organizations, fast-track the deployment, maintenance and upgrading of physical assets, and invest in new technologies and training to help reduce virtually all methane emissions.

Aiming for Zero complements several other multi-stakeholder initiatives to reduce methane emissions, including the Methane Guiding Principles, the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 and the Global Methane Alliance.
